Alden Bradford Spooner I

 

 

1824 - June 6th - Alden Bradford Spooner I - Born in Sangerville, Piscataquis County, Maine.  Died Feb 5th, 1877 in Morro Bay, San Luis Obispo, County. Ca.  He was 53 years old.

At the age of 14 joined the U.S. Navy.  Sailed around the world on the Constitution (Old Ironsides).  Upon his return home he left the salt water and sailed the Great Lakes.

1848 - July 11th - Married Roxana Gillmore in Loraine, Ohio. Sired seven children, Roxana, Alden B II, Nellie M, David R., Edith E, Cornelius G., Edmund L.

1867 - Preached first sermon at the mouth of Cayucos Creek

1868 - Took possession of 150 acres 3 miles up Torro Creek near the settlement of Morro.  Moved family into a tent.  Within a month their house was ready.

1868 - Preached first regular sermon in San Luis Obispo.  Aug. ordained as a deacon in the San Luis Obispo Methodist Church.

1875 - Sold Torro Creek property, moved to Morro; became town constable. His diary notes that the town of Morro had two saloons, 15 houses, one store, one tavern (kept by a widowed woman), and a boarding house.

1876 - Began piloting ships in and out of  Morro Harbor.  Purchased three shares in the steamer "Mary Taylor."

1877 - Feb. 5th - The last entry in his diary reads, "Feb 5th dawned dark and squally."  Reverend Spooner went out in his small boat to pilot in the "Mary Taylor." His body was never found.

1877 - March 3rd - From the Probate Court of the County of San Luis Obispo, State of California  -  The total value of A.B. Spooner I estate, including one cow, one lumber wagon, one harrow, and a chest of tools, totaled $1,249.
